VJ

Screen and sensor looks, tracking marks, a pop-art cut and a camera fly-through of clips.

Coming; not published yet.

VJ makes a picture look like it came from a screen, a tape or a sensor. Brightness stands in for heat and depth, so these are looks, not measurements. It also draws tracking marks on whatever moves, cuts a person into a pop-art poster and builds a camera fly-through of clips.

Use it

The looks are layer effects. Tracking runs once, offline, and the components draw the saved result.

import { Layer, Video, staticFile } from '@kinetographdev/core';
import { Blobs, thermal, type BlobTrack } from '@kinetographdev/vj';
import track from './track/clip-blobs.json' with { type: 'json' };

<Layer id="clip" effects={thermal()}>
  <Video src={staticFile('video/clip.mp4')} width={1920} height={1080} fit="cover" muted />
</Layer>
<Blobs track={track as BlobTrack} box="corners" links="chain" />

Looks

EffectWhat it does
crt()Curved glass, scanlines, aperture grille, static and dark corners. switchOff(t) folds the picture to a dot.
vhs()Line wobble, smeared colour, a head-switch tear, snow and dropouts.
oneBit()One bit a pixel, with an ordered dither.
thermal(), depthLook()A thermal palette, or near-white and far-black depth.
pixels()A magnifier that resolves into red, green and blue stripes.
acidHeat, nightVision, screenGlow, grainyBWFlash looks to cut on the beat.

lookEffects(look) turns a Studio panel value into effects.

Components

ComponentWhat it does
<Blobs>Boxes, labels and links on a tracked clip's blobs. Key props: track, box, label, links, blend.
<Reticle>A box with corner ticks and a label on one tracked point. Props: track, size, label, jitter.
<PopArt>Cuts a clip of a person to an anime poster. Props: src, matte, cuts, flash, title.
<Fragments>Clips seen through windows on planes at different depths, with a camera moving through them. Props: pieces, camera, fog.

pointAt and blobsAt read the saved tracks at a frame. The full lists are on the VJ page.

In Studio and with an agent

Studio gets a VJ panel with a card for each look and its own sliders and colours. On the preview you drag and resize the CRT screen and drag the magnifier's centre. A second panel sets how the tracking marks look.

Limits

  • Tracking runs on your own machine ahead of time, so the panel only styles the result.
  • PopArt needs a matte of the person, which a bundled tool makes once per clip.
  • Fragments has no detection model. Whoever edits the video names the boxes.
  • The plugin adds no agent tools. Its skill walks an agent through tracking a clip, checking the debug images and rendering a still.
